Where you’ll be
Santo Stefano Square, Bologna, Italy
The S.Stefano neighborhood is one of the characteristic views of the historic center of Bologna. Coming from the Two Towers, the opposite front of the square is closed by the Basilica di Santo Stefano complex, or the Seven Churches.
The square, often used for cultural events and concerts, is surrounded by important buildings. Looking at the Basilica, on the left we have the complex of Isolani palaces composed of the already Lupari and Bolognini palaces, purchased and joined at different times by the Isolani family. On the right, however, there is the Palazzo Bolognini Amorini Salina, famous for its terracotta-headed frieze, and a row of 15th century merchant houses, which belonged in different moments to the Beccadelli families, then Bovi and Tacconi. On the left side you can reach Strada Maggiore through the Corte Isolani passage.

- Torre Asinelli: The tallest and most famous tower in Bologna offers a panoramic view of the city. Avoid long queues by visiting on Saturday afternoons.

- Bologna’s Porticoes: The world’s longest porticoes leading to the Basilica of San Luca.

Hidden Bologna: Michelangelo and Cimabue

Michelangelo in Bologna
Michelangelo is often associated with Florence and Rome, but he also left his mark in Bologna during two visits.

First Visit: After the death of Lorenzo de’ Medici in 1492, Michelangelo, without a patron or income, traveled to Bologna on his way back from Venice. He was stopped at customs for not paying the entry tax, but a wealthy senator, Giovan Francesco Aldrovandi, paid his fine and offered him a job.
- Aldrovandi hired Michelangelo to read works of Dante, Petrarch, and Boccaccio to him without the Bolognese accent.
- Through Aldrovandi’s connections, Michelangelo was tasked with creating three small sculptures (Saint Petronius, Saint Proclus, and an angel holding a torch) for the Arca di San Domenico, the tomb of Saint Dominic.
- These sculptures are now part of one of Bologna’s most important artistic monuments, showcasing Michelangelo’s early genius.

Cimabue in Bologna
